At Charlotte Chinese Story Time (CCST), we believe that language acquisition flourishes when it is rooted in joy, movement, and authentic cultural connection. This May, in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, we hosted a special themed event designed to invite families into a multisensory exploration of Chinese heritage through the lens of two cultural staples: Bao (steamed buns) and Tea.
Setting the Stage: Connection and Community
The morning began with our signature warm-up—a blend of music and movement that serves as a linguistic bridge for our young learners. As the familiar notes of our welcome song filled the room, children were immersed in a supportive Chinese-speaking environment.

To provide context for the day, we introduced the significance of AAPI Heritage Month in an age-appropriate way. We framed it not as a complex definition, but as a vibrant celebration of the diverse languages, foods, and traditions that make our community beautiful.

Literary Inspiration: From "Bao" to "Tea"
The heart of our program featured two celebrated picture books that offered contrasting yet complementary perspectives on Asian culture:

Amy Wu and the Perfect Bao: A high-energy story focusing on family traditions, perseverance, and the culinary joy of making handmade buns.
Luli and the Language of Tea: A gentle narrative illustrating how the simple act of sharing tea can bridge linguistic divides and foster global friendship.
Interactive Learning: Character & Craft
Bridging literacy with kinesthetic play, we introduced the Chinese character 包 (Bāo). After exploring its visual structure, the children became "Happy Pastry Chefs," singing and performing the rhythmic actions of kneading, rolling, and pinching dough.

This culminated in a hands-on Clay Bao Workshop. By shaping their own "buns"—complete with intricate pleats—children practiced fine motor skills while grounding their vocabulary in a tangible, imaginative experience.

A Sensory Exploration of Tea Culture
Transitioning to the serene world of tea, we introduced the character 茶 (Chá). Our educators showcased an array of tea leaves and traditional teapots, allowing children to observe the textures and scents of Chinese tea culture.

To broaden their horizons, we expanded the lens to include tea traditions from India, Morocco, and Japan. This global perspective helped our young participants understand that while cultural expressions vary, the values of hospitality and connection are universal.
Artistry in Bloom: A Tribute to Mother’s Day
A highlight of the event was a guest artist workshop led by the talented Ms. Wang. In a beautiful fusion of AAPI celebration and Mother’s Day preparation, Ms. Wang guided the children in crafting vibrant handmade paper flowers.

This session epitomized the CCST philosophy: giving children the opportunity to create something thoughtful and beautiful with their own hands. We are deeply grateful to Ms. Wang for sharing her artistry and warmth with our families.
A Lasting Connection
The event concluded with a burst of energy under the rainbow parachute and a sea of bubbles—a joyful finale to a morning of deep learning.
At CCST, we are honored to curate spaces where the Chinese language comes alive and culture is celebrated with curiosity and confidence. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the families who joined us. Your participation turns these stories into a living heritage.
Join us as we continue to share the beauty of Chinese language and culture through story, art, and community.
