Spring is a season of renewal—when the grass turns green, flowers begin to bloom, and the world slowly awakens with warmth and light.
On a beautiful morning at Matthews Library, families gathered for a joyful and immersive experience—Charlotte Chinese Story Time’s Spring-Themed Chinese Storytime and Art Workshop.
Welcoming Children Through Music
We began our storytime with a familiar favorite, “Open, Shut Them,” helping children transition into a calm and focused learning space through movement and rhythm.

With the gentle accompaniment of a ukulele, we sang a welcoming song together, greeting each child and family. Music creates a natural bridge into language, allowing children to feel comfortable, engaged, and ready to participate.
Exploring Spring Through Play and Movement
What does spring look like?
Together, we explored:
Grass turning green
Flowers blooming
Gentle spring rain
Warmer weather
Through movement activities and the finger play “Planting Flowers in the Garden,” children were invited to imagine themselves as little gardeners—planting seeds, watering them, and watching them grow.

This type of embodied learning helps children connect language with real-world experiences.
Learning Chinese Through Multi-Sensory Experience
During the session, children were introduced to key Chinese vocabulary related to spring:
春 (spring) · 花 (flower) · 草 (grass) · 雨 (rain)
We incorporated baby sign language alongside spoken Chinese, supporting comprehension for younger children and those from non-Chinese-speaking households.
This multi-sensory approach allows children to engage visually, physically, and verbally—making language learning more accessible and meaningful.
Stories That Bring Spring to Life
We shared two spring-themed picture books:
Spring Is Here
The Little Calf’s Spring
Through storytelling, children experienced seasonal changes, emotions, and growth in a way that is both relatable and engaging.
Stories provide a powerful context for language learning while nurturing imagination and curiosity.
Creating Spring Through Art
Following storytime, families stayed for a special Spring Art Workshop led by local artist Ms. Qian Wang.

Inspired by the Chinese character “春” (Spring), children created their own unique artworks using drawing, collage, and creative materials.

From tiny yellow ducklings to blossoming trees and flowing green branches, each piece reflected a child’s personal interpretation of spring.
More importantly, the process gave children the opportunity to:
Express creativity
Build confidence
Connect language with artistic expression
More Than a Storytime
What we witnessed was more than just an event.
We saw children:
Begin to speak and recognize Chinese words
Engage with nature through language
Connect stories to their own experiences
Express themselves through art
We also saw families learning and participating together—creating meaningful shared experiences.
This is at the heart of CCST’s mission:
To create joyful, accessible spaces for early bilingual learning
To connect children and families through language, culture, and creativity
