CCST Welcomed Families to a Joyful “My Little Hands” Chinese Storytime and Spring Butterfly Art Workshop

On Saturday, April 18 at 10:00 AM, Charlotte Chinese Story Time (CCST) hosted a vibrant and engaging “My Little Hands” Chinese Storytime in the SouthPark Regional Library Community Room, welcoming young children and families for a joyful morning of language learning, music, movement, storytelling, and art.

Designed for early learners and caregivers, this themed program introduced Chinese in a warm, playful, and highly interactive setting. From the moment families arrived, children were invited to sing, move, observe, and participate, creating an atmosphere filled with energy, curiosity, and connection.

The storytime began with welcome songs and ukulele-led interaction, followed by movement activities that encouraged children to respond physically and verbally in Chinese. A key part of the program was the introduction of the Chinese characters 手 (“hand”) and 双 (“pair”), helping children build vocabulary through visual recognition, repetition, and action-based learning.

Families also enjoyed two themed picture books, 《千变万化的手》 and 《会说话的手》, which guided children to explore how hands can create, communicate, help, and express emotion. Interactive gesture games extended the learning beyond the books, allowing children to use their own hands to “speak” through motions such as waving, cheering, handshakes, quiet signals, and partner play.

The program also included fingerplay, number review, and group participation activities that supported early Chinese language development in a way that was joyful, age-appropriate, and memorable. Children remained actively engaged throughout the session, while caregivers were able to experience language learning as something shared, meaningful, and full of connection.

Following storytime, CCST was pleased to welcome local artist Mrs. Wang, who led a special Spring Butterfly Art Workshop for participating families. During the creative session, children used their hands to design and decorate beautiful butterfly artwork, extending the day’s theme through hands-on artistic expression. The workshop added another meaningful dimension to the program by blending creativity, fine motor practice, and seasonal art exploration in a family-friendly environment.

This special collaboration also reflected CCST’s commitment to partnering with local artists and community members to create enriching cultural experiences for children and families. By combining storytelling, music, movement, language exposure, and art, CCST continues to make Chinese learning accessible, engaging, and rooted in community.

At CCST, we believe early language learning is most powerful when it is joyful, interactive, and connected to real experiences. Programs like “My Little Hands” are part of our ongoing mission to create welcoming spaces where children can develop interest in Chinese language and culture while families build lasting community connections.

We are grateful to all the families who joined us at SouthPark Regional Library, and we extend our special thanks to Mrs. Wang for sharing her creativity and care with our community. We look forward to welcoming more children and families to future CCST storytimes and cultural programs.
