On September 20, Charlotte Chinese Story Time hosted a lively Chinese Brush Painting Workshop for Children at Pineville Library — part of the ongoing Chinese Traditional Art Workshop for Children series supported by ASC Culture Blocks.

The workshop was led by local artist Ms. Chen, who guided families through the beauty, history, and techniques of Chinese brush painting (Guóhuà). More than 40 families attended this special cultural event, filling the room with curiosity, creativity, and laughter.

Ms. Chen began by introducing the origins and evolution of Chinese brush painting — an art form that reflects the harmony between humans and nature through expressive lines and ink tones. She also introduced the Four Treasures of the Study (文房四宝) — the brush, ink, paper, and inkstone — which have been essential tools for Chinese scholars and artists for centuries.

After learning about these traditional materials, the children were taught how to properly hold and use a Chinese brush, control the amount of ink, and make steady yet lively strokes.

The theme of the day was painting pandas and bamboo, two beloved symbols in Chinese art. Step by step, Ms. Chen demonstrated how to paint a panda’s round head, soft body, and expressive eyes, followed by the elegant lines of bamboo. The children painted directly on long scroll paper, bringing their own creativity to each piece.

The results were remarkable — every panda had its own charm and personality! Families proudly shared their finished paintings, and the room was filled with joy and a sense of cultural connection. Even staff members from Culture Blocks joined in the fun, painting alongside the children.

Giovanna, a staff member from Culture Blocks, visited our workshop to experience Chinese brush painting and created her own panda artwork alongside the instructor, Ms. Chen. On the left is Ms. Jenny Zhan, founder of Charlotte Chinese Story Time (CCST).

This event beautifully demonstrated how art can bridge cultures and generations. Through hands-on learning, children not only explored the world of traditional Chinese painting but also experienced the mindfulness, patience, and joy that come with using brush and ink.

Charlotte Chinese Story Time extends heartfelt thanks to Ms. Chen, all participating families, and Culture Blocks for their support in making cultural learning accessible to the Charlotte community.
