On September 13, 2025, Charlotte Chinese Story Time hosted a memorable cultural workshop at the Pineville Library Community Room, introducing families to the beauty of Chinese ink diffusion painting. The event drew a full house of eager participants, including children, parents, and volunteers, all ready to explore this unique art form.

We were honored to welcome local artist and educator Qian Wang as our guest instructor. Ms. Wang is not only an accomplished art teacher but also a dedicated Chinese language teacher, and she brought her passion for both visual art and cultural education into the classroom. With warmth and expertise, she guided the children step by step, demonstrating how watercolor markers, cotton swabs, and rice paper can be combined with water to create stunning ink diffusion effects.

During the session, children experimented with colors spreading across Xuan paper, blending naturally to form dreamy lotus ponds, fish, and dragonflies. Families were encouraged to express creativity freely while also learning about the traditions of Chinese painting. The workshop’s theme, “Lotus Pond” (荷塘), symbolized purity and resilience — values deeply embedded in Chinese culture.

The atmosphere in the room was filled with curiosity and joy. Parents and children sat side by side, sharing ideas and laughter. Volunteers and board members from Charlotte Chinese Story Time were on hand to provide assistance, ensuring a smooth and welcoming experience for all.

At the end of the workshop, children proudly showcased their finished artworks — each piece unique, colorful, and brimming with imagination. For many, it was their very first time trying this traditional art form, and their sense of accomplishment was visible in the smiles as they held their paintings up for photos.

This program was part of our ongoing mission to bring authentic Chinese cultural experiences to families in the Charlotte community. Thanks to the support of Culture Blocks, a community partnership funded by Mecklenburg County and led by the Arts & Science Council, we are able to provide these enriching programs free of charge.

We are deeply grateful to Ms. Qian Wang for sharing her expertise and to all the families who participated. The overwhelming enthusiasm reaffirms the importance of connecting children to cultural heritage through interactive, hands-on experiences.

Charlotte Chinese Story Time remains committed to creating opportunities where culture, creativity, and community come together.
