On February 14, 2026, Charlotte Chinese Story Time hosted its annual Chinese New Year Cultural Fair at Hope Hall — and the response from the community was extraordinary.

From the moment doors opened at 1:00 PM, families began arriving steadily. By mid-afternoon, the venue was filled wall-to-wall with children, parents, and community members eager to participate in hands-on cultural activities. Activity stations remained busy throughout the entire four-hour program.
Due to the overwhelming turnout, our team had little opportunity to capture photographs — we were fully engaged supporting families at every table.
A Fully Immersive Cultural Experience
This year’s fair featured an expanded lineup of interactive cultural stations designed to introduce traditional Chinese New Year customs to children and families of all backgrounds.
Highlights included:
Fu Character Rubbing (福字拓印)

Lacquer Fan Painting (漆扇)
Lantern Making (做花灯)– Fish Lanterns– Butterfly Lanterns– Traditional Revolving “Zou Ma Deng” Lanterns
Calligraphy: Writing “Fu” (写福)

Calligraphy: Four-Character Blessings (四字祝福语)

Traditional Costume Dress-Up & Photo Station
Herbal Sachet Crafting

Traditional Glass Bead Jewelry Making
Peking Opera Mask Painting

Red Envelope Printing (拓印红包)

Fan Printing (拓印扇子)

Ring Toss (套圈)
Pitch-Pot Game (投壶)

Each station provided a meaningful opportunity for participants to learn through doing. Children carefully pressed ink onto red paper, painted intricate mask designs, assembled lantern frames, and practiced traditional games that date back centuries.

The lantern-making stations were especially popular. Young participants proudly carried their completed fish and butterfly lanterns through the hall, adding movement and color to an already vibrant atmosphere.
Community-Wide Participation
One of the most powerful aspects of this year’s event was its broad community representation. Families from diverse cultural backgrounds participated enthusiastically, many experiencing Chinese New Year traditions for the first time.
Throughout the afternoon, volunteers worked continuously to replenish materials and guide activities. Despite limited staffing, the dedication of our volunteer team ensured that the event ran smoothly and safely.

Special Guests and Festive Highlights
The appearance of our beloved Panda mascot and the God of Wealth (财神爷) brought additional excitement to the celebration. Families lined up for photos, and children eagerly interacted with the characters, creating joyful memories.
Food vendors added to the festive spirit, offering egg tarts, cupcakes, tanghulu (candied fruit skewers), and sweet dessert soups — all of which were warmly received by young attendees.
A Celebration Made Possible by Community Support
The success of our 2026 Chinese New Year Cultural Fair would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors and community partners.
We are honored to recognize our Title Sponsors:
Their leadership and commitment to cultural education and community engagement continue to make meaningful programming like this possible for families across states.
We also extend our sincere appreciation to our Sponsor Booth Partners, who joined us onsite and helped enrich the festival experience:
These partners brought additional energy and engagement to the event, connecting directly with families and contributing to the vibrant, community-centered atmosphere of the fair.

Growing Community Impact
The 2026 Chinese New Year Cultural Fair marked one of the largest community turnouts in our organization’s history. The packed venue and sustained engagement throughout the afternoon demonstrated a growing interest in cultural programming within the Charlotte community.

Events like this reflect Charlotte Chinese Story Time’s ongoing mission: to create inclusive, educational, and joyful cultural experiences that bring families together.
As attendance continues to grow year after year, we are inspired to expand our capacity and reach even more families in the future.
