Charlotte Chinese Story Time Concludes Two-Week Chinese Cultural Immersion Summer Camp

Charlotte Chinese Story Time successfully concluded its two-week Chinese Cultural Immersion Summer Camp, offering children an engaging opportunity to experience Chinese language and culture through storytelling, traditional arts, creative expression, and performance.
Over the course of the program, campers participated in a wide range of hands-on activities inspired by Chinese cultural traditions and intangible cultural heritage. The camp was designed to help children connect language learning with meaningful cultural experiences, allowing them to speak, create, perform, and share what they learned in an interactive and joyful environment.
During the first week, campers explored Chinese traditional arts through projects and performances connected to the Chinese zodiac, Nini Dog folk art, blue-and-white porcelain, Chinese opera movements, Sichuan Opera face-changing, and traditional wax dyeing. Children performed The Chinese Zodiac Race, presented an original picture book titled A Little Bottle’s Blue Flower Dress, and introduced their wax-dyeing artwork as “little museum guides.”
The second week focused on light, color, storytelling, and shadow. Campers created Chinese kites featuring butterflies, fish, rockets, dragonflies, and other imaginative designs. They also explored tie-dye, created artwork inspired by the story of the Nine-Colored Deer, made shadow puppet characters, and performed the traditional story Chang’e Flies to the Moon through Chinese shadow puppetry.
A key goal of the camp was to bring together language and culture in a natural and meaningful way. Instead of learning Chinese only through memorization, children practiced the language by introducing their own artwork, presenting short lines, performing classroom plays, and participating in story-based showcases.
“Language becomes more powerful when children can use it to tell stories, describe their own creations, and share culture with others,” said Jenny Zhan, founder of Charlotte Chinese Story Time. “This camp gave children a chance to experience Chinese not only as a subject to study, but as a living language connected to art, family, tradition, and community.”
The camp concluded with student showcases and art exhibitions, where families were invited to watch the children’s performances and view their creative work. The showcases included Chinese story performances, artwork presentations, a Nine-Colored Deer classroom play, and a shadow puppet performance supported by middle school and high school student volunteers.
Parents responded positively to the program, highlighting the strong integration of Chinese language, traditional arts, storytelling, and performance. For many campers, the experience offered a meaningful way to build confidence while connecting with Chinese culture in a hands-on and age-appropriate setting.
