We were honored to be featured on Charlotte Today, a morning show on WCNC, to share Chinese New Year traditions and highlight upcoming community events hosted by Charlotte Chinese Story Time.
This appearance marked our third time being invited to a local television station to talk about Chinese culture and family traditions. Each opportunity reminds us how meaningful it is to see community-based cultural work recognized and supported by local media.
Sharing Chinese New Year with the Charlotte Community
During the segment, we introduced Chinese New Year as a family-centered holiday—often described as Thanksgiving and Christmas rolled into one. It is a time for reunion, shared meals, and passing traditions down to children. Families celebrate through preparations such as cleaning the home for a fresh start, gathering for a New Year’s Eve dinner, wearing new clothes, giving red envelopes to children as blessings, and enjoying lion and dragon dances, cultural performances, and festive foods. The celebration traditionally lasts 15 days and concludes with the Lantern Festival.
We also shared how families in Charlotte can experience Chinese New Year in a hands-on and welcoming way through our programs. At our events, children and parents learn by doing—making traditional lanterns, practicing Chinese calligraphy, playing ancient games, and engaging with cultural symbols in a way that feels joyful and accessible.
Upcoming Chinese New Year Events
During the interview, we highlighted two upcoming programs:
• Chinese New Year Cultural Fair on Saturday, February 14 | 1:00–5:00 PM
A free, family-friendly community event featuring hands-on cultural activities, traditional games, and opportunities for families to celebrate together.
• Children’s Lunar New Year Showcase on Saturday, February 21
A stage performance celebrating young performers, featuring kung fu, traditional dance, and other cultural presentations by local children.
These events reflect our ongoing commitment to creating inclusive spaces where families of all backgrounds can experience and appreciate Chinese culture.
Building Cultural Bridges Through Community Programs
For us, this media appearance was about more than visibility. Programs like Charlotte Chinese Story Time help build cultural bridges in a diverse city like Charlotte. For Chinese American children, these experiences nurture pride in their heritage. For the broader community, they offer a window into a beautiful and meaningful tradition.
We are grateful to the Charlotte Today team for the warm and thoughtful conversation, and for helping amplify community voices. We look forward to continuing our work—connecting families, celebrating culture, and fostering belonging through shared stories and experiences.
