Throughout March, Charlotte Chinese Story Time (CCST) proudly hosted a dynamic four-part Pre-Competition Coaching Workshop series. This initiative was designed to prepare young orators for the upcoming 2nd Charlotte Cup Chinese Poetry Recitation Contest this May.
Held at the Pineville Library Community Room, the series welcomed over 120 children and families. The workshops provided structured, high-quality training that bridged the gap between language learning and professional stage performance.
Sessions 1 & 2: Building a Strong Foundation
The journey began with the fundamentals of vocal art. Under the expert guidance of recitation artist Nina Chen, students engaged in targeted exercises to master:
Breath Control & Vocal Projection: Learning how to support their voice from within.
Clarity & Diction: Refining pronunciation and tonal precision.
Initial Confidence: Students were encouraged to step forward and recite in front of their peers—a vital first step in overcoming stage fright and building early "stage courage."
Session 3: From Recitation to Performance
In the third session, the focus expanded from the voice to the entire body. Participants explored the nuances of stage presence, including:
Posture & Poise: Learning how to stand with confidence.
Visual Engagement: The importance of eye contact in connecting with an audience.
Meaningful Gestures: Using movement to enhance the emotional impact of the poetry. The transformation was remarkable as students evolved from simply "reading" to truly "performing."
Session 4: The Final Rehearsal — Stepping Into the Spotlight
The series culminated in a full-scale simulation of the competition experience. This "dress rehearsal" walked students through the entire professional stage process:
The Entrance: Walking on stage and finding their mark.
The Introduction: Delivering a clear and composed self-introduction.
Technical Precision: Mastering the art of the pause, breathing, and the final bow. With the support of instructors and parents, each child stepped onto the stage to present their piece in its entirety, internalizing a sense of readiness and professional grace.
Growth Beyond the Classroom
The growth witnessed over these four weeks was truly inspiring. Children who initially approached the microphone with hesitation began to stand taller and speak with a resonant, clear voice.
At CCST, we believe these programs offer benefits that extend far beyond the competition. By nurturing creativity, confidence, and the courage to express oneself, we are providing children with essential life skills that will serve them well both on and off the stage.
Looking Ahead to May
As our students finalize their preparation for the 2nd Charlotte Cup this May, they carry with them more than just improved technique—they carry a newfound sense of self-assurance.
This journey from "recitation to performance" is just the beginning. We look forward to seeing every student shine on the big stage!
