On September 27, Charlotte Chinese Story Time hosted another inspiring session of the Chinese Traditional Art Workshop for Children — a Foam Block Printing Workshop held at the Pineville Library, led by Founder Ms. Jenny Zhan and Board Member Ms. Meiyi Lin. The workshop offered families a hands-on journey through the fascinating history and evolution of Chinese printing arts.

The session began with an introduction to ancient stone rubbings, one of the earliest forms of image reproduction in China. Participants learned how early artisans placed paper over carved stone surfaces and rubbed ink to create imprints — a technique that later inspired the invention of printing technology.

Ms. Jenny then introduced the development of movable-type printing, one of China’s most influential inventions, and explained how printing evolved through history into today’s modern techniques.

To help families experience this traditional art form in a safe and accessible way, the instructors demonstrated the modern adaptation using foam blocks. While traditional block carving involves complex processes and heavy tools, the foam-based method allowed children to explore the concept of relief printing in a creative, family-friendly format.
Because carving required precision, parents were encouraged to participate actively, assisting younger children in shaping their designs. Older participants, especially those aged 10 and above, were able to carve independently under supervision.

Once the designs were ready, the families learned how to apply ink evenly using brayers (rollers), press their blocks onto rice paper, and carefully transfer the images. The results were stunning — each print reflected the unique creativity and teamwork of parent and child.

The atmosphere throughout the workshop was joyful and collaborative. Parents and children worked side by side, sharing laughter and learning. To celebrate their hard work, every child received a photo frame to display their favorite print — a proud keepsake of their artistic accomplishment and family connection.

Charlotte Chinese Story Time extends heartfelt thanks to all participating families, to ASC Culture Blocks (a community partnership funded by Mecklenburg County) for their generous support, and to our dedicated volunteers, whose time and enthusiasm made this workshop truly special.
