On October 4, Charlotte Chinese Story Time hosted the fourth session of its Chinese Traditional Art Workshop for Children Cloisonné (Jingtai Lan) — at the Pineville Library. The event was a joyful blend of culture, creativity, and community, introducing families to one of China’s most intricate and beautiful traditional crafts.

The workshop was led by Ms. Qian Wang, a local artist and Chinese language teacher, who guided participants through the fascinating history and process of cloisonné. She began by sharing how this centuries-old art form — once used to decorate royal objects during the Ming and Qing dynasties — combines fine metalwork and vivid enamel painting to create shimmering designs that last for generations.

Ms. Wang explained each step of the traditional technique, from outlining patterns with fine copper wires to filling them with colorful enamel and firing them at high temperatures. While the authentic process requires advanced skill and patience, the children experienced the essence of this craft through a hands-on project designed for their age.

Each child received a pre-wired bamboo coaster, where they focused on the creative step of filling in colors. Using bright enamel-like paints, the young artists brought to life traditional Chinese patterns — flowers, dragons, mountains, and lucky symbols — with their own imagination and flair.

The results were beautiful. Laughter and excitement filled the room as children proudly held up their finished pieces, glowing with the same brilliance that has made cloisonné a symbol of artistic heritage and timeless beauty.

Ms. Wang also shared practical tips for families to finish their pieces at home — such as using a clear spray coat to preserve the shine and color.

This workshop marked the final session of Charlotte Chinese Story Time’s Chinese Traditional Art Workshop Series, made possible through the support of ASC Culture Blocks, a community partnership funded by Mecklenburg County. Over the past several months, the series introduced families to a range of Chinese art forms — from Ink Diffusion Painting, to Chinese Brush Painting, to Foam Block Printing, and finally Cloisonné (Jingtai Lan) — inspiring creativity, curiosity, and cultural appreciation across the community.

“We hope these workshops not only help children discover the joy of art,” said Ms. Jenny, founder of Charlotte Chinese Story Time, “but also help them build a bridge between cultures through hands-on creativity.”

Charlotte Chinese Story Time received numerous emails from parents expressing gratitude and appreciation for these free cultural art programs.

“Our child really enjoyed the hands-on experiences and learned so much about Chinese traditional culture. We’re very grateful to be part of such meaningful, high-quality, and free community programs. We hope there will be even more similar events in the future!” – Fuchao Family

“My son participated in all 4 workshops and loved every one of them! It’s wonderful to see how these programs bring families together to learn about different cultures. For parents who are budget-conscious, programs like this make it possible for children to enjoy quality and fun experiences that would otherwise be too costly.” – Natalie

Charlotte Chinese Story Time extends heartfelt thanks to all participating families, volunteers, and partners who made this event possible. Together, they continue to bring Chinese culture and art closer to families throughout the Mecklenburg County.
